"DRINK FROM ME AND LIVE FOREVER"
The movie Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, released November 11, 1994, is an excellent horror movie directed by Neil Jordan. The movie incorporates various horror aspects that work together to create a story that intrigues the viewers and tells a worth-while story. The movie is about a vampire, Louis, played by Brad Pitt, who tells his epic life story of how he became a vampire, his ongoing struggle with his creator, Lestat, and the deep connection formed with his "adopted" daughter figure, Claudia. His creator is played by Tom Cruise and Claudia is played by Kristen Dunst. As he narrates his story, we learn more and more about who the character is through his personal struggle with trying to survive as a vampire, while still trying to hold on to his humanity. However, his ruthless and destructive creator pressures him to the true ways of a vampire. When Claudia comes into the picture and is 'turned' as well, he forms a strong connection with her, becoming her fatherly figure who will do anything to protect her. Nevertheless, as he watches Claudia turn into an accustomed vampire, his struggles continue as he searches for ways to escape their ways.
I highly recommend any horror-loving viewers to go see this movie. It tells a captivating story that combines thrilling horror scenes with aspects of romance, morality, relationships and personal struggles. Not only does it tell an intriguing story but the casting choices were brilliant. Before watching the movie, I would have probably guessed that having Brad Pitt play the main character would not be the best idea, but after seeing the movie, I think it was a perfect match. He does a great job playing such a complex role. In the movie, Louis is so torn between the decisions he makes, the lifestyle he is adapting to, and the person he is becoming, that he always seems to have something on his mind. It is clear to the audience that he is good at heart, but he can't handle the pressure of others, mostly Lestat and Claudia. He is easily influenced, but doesn't do anything whole-heartedly because he knows right from wrong. In one scene, short after he becomes a vampire, he has a conversation with one of his maids, looses his self control, and kills her. As he carries her bloody body outside to where all the other work men were gathered, he yells, "Hear me now! This place is cursed, damned, and yes your master is the devil! Get out white you can! You are free men! You hear me"? He is so afraid to hurt even more of them that he tells them to all run away. In every seen, we we see more of who his character is and grow more fond of him. Tom Cruise also plays his role of the villain well. He does a good job at pretending to have some humanity for a line or two, then easily shows how ridiculous the other characters are for believing him. He also adds some humor to the movie which, if used correctly, is a good touch to a horror movie. Lastly, Claudia, played by Kristen Dunst, was a good choice as well. In the beginning of the movie, she played the role of a little girl really well. Once she became a vampire, her mind got older as her body stayed the same, and she did a good job adapting to playing a more mature character with the mind of an adult.
If you like horror movies, this movie can fit perfectly into the horror genre category. First of all, it is a movie about vampires and it involves a lot of scenes filled with blood, fire and swords. Not only do the contents of the movie confirm its' genre, but also the way the story is told makes it a good horror film. Instead of just having a movie about vampires, it is about one vampire in modern times, telling his own story from hundreds of years ago. Also, having Louis narrative the movie with his mysterious dark voice makes it that much more thrilling. When the audience is not watching him tell the story, they are watching the story happen with a voice-over of his voice. I thought that was a smart way to tell the story and contributed the the horror-esque. A good horror movie is not only about having fictional characters and gore scenes, but it also has a lot to do with the setting and tone of the movie. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles does all of this and more, therefore I highly recommend anyone with an interest to see this movie to go for it, because you will not be disappointed.
